Wall Stories

Wall Stories bring my classroom to life! I love watching and listening to the children reading the story on the wall using a "reading wand." Children reading to one another teaches literacy strategies, increases sight word vocabulary, and promotes a love of reading! Five Little Ducks was so popular with my class that they wrote the innovation Five Little Penguins. During the writing of the new story, I asked my students what sound a penguin made and without hesitation they responded, "Grack!"

The Seven Mice text is an innovation that I created by blending the best of Ed Young's, Seven Blind Mice and Eric Carle's, Today is Monday. The text may be utilized to create a big book, a wall story, or an individual student book. This innovation reinforces recognition of the days of the week and color words. The Seven Mice consists of 1 direction page and 6 pages of text.

The Little Red Hen wall story was created especially for Open House one year. To add to the night, we baked bread on the day of Open House to share with our parents. It was a huge success!

Walls can be turned into windows of learning by creating wall stories. Ten in the Bed is a familiar story that children enjoy reading and singing! Ten in the Bed consists of 9 legal-size masters and directions. For this project you will need a photo of each student.

Ten Spring Flowers is an interactive wall story or big book. The students water color an array of flowers to create this story. To create variation in reading, the names of ten students are attached with Velcro at the beginning of each reading. One flower on each page is also attached with Velcro to enable the children to "pick one" as each page is read. This is a beautiful story to share with parents on Open House Night.

Snowman Spectacular is a collection of 3 rhymes: Snowman by the House, Ten Little Snowmen, and I'm a Little Snowman Fat. The set includes text, pocket chart pictures, and student booklets for two of the rhymes, and directions for creating big books or wall stories. In the big book, Ten Little Snowmen, my students love moving a Velcro sun from one page to another as they read the book.
